Boat of the Abyss
Key Largo, Florida Keys
Photographic Story:
In 1965, the world famous ‘Christ of the Abyss’ statue was installed underwater in Key Largo as a memorial for all those who had lost their lives at sea. The idea for this under/over image was dreamed up during the lockdowns of 2020, which I photographed some time later . My goal was to replicate the magic of my most popular photograph, ‘Watcher of Paradise’, but also create something fresh and different. The little seafoam colored johnboat belongs to a friend from Tennessee, who loves to visit the keys and venture further out during flat seas. I illuminated the statue with powerful underwater strobes, and used a custom made 16” dome for a split perspective.
Below is a behind-the-scenes photo of the artist with the type of camera used to create this image.
