Smathers Beach is an iconic half-mile stretch of sand and palm trees in Key West, America’s own legendary tropical island, the place where Ernest Hemingway went to relax and write some of the great novels of the 20th Century. On a breezy, warm summer evening, near the end of a summer photo trek across South Florida, the sky lit up with one of the most brilliant and complex sunsets I’ve even seen.
